Score 3 – 5

On a cold and wet February morning, the ladies 4s took on Hereford 1s at Brockworth beach. Having started the week with an impressive 13.5 players, an intrepid 11 finally took to the pitch (the .5 had kit in the car, just in case!)

In the reverse fixture back in November, Hereford (currently sitting 4th in the league) scored considerably more goals than our solitary 1, so we knew this would be a difficult game. However, the team went out with a positive mindset from the off and played some lovely attacking hockey.

The first goal was scored by Izzy, a lovely deflection over the keeper, unfortunately that keeper was our very own Laura, but Izzy quickly made up for this, by scoring at the correct end to even her account for the day. As a side note, she also did an excellent job of covering our wide defenders, Vicky and Neve, both of whom are midfielders at heart, as they went on runs up the wing!

By half time, we were 3-1 down, but playing some great hockey and really taking the game to Hereford. Half time squashies (a classic!) from the newly restocked haribo pocket in the kit bag were gratefully received, along with a team talk which consisted mainly of keep going, more of the same.

Early in the second half, the 4s scored again through Smithy for 3-2 – game on! With Hereford slightly stunned, the intensity of the game increased, and the 4s kept pushing forward for an equaliser.

Hereford scored again, before Scarlett, in her first game for the 4s, took the ball from defence to attack and scored an amazing goal from the edge of the D for 4-3 – equaliser hunting game on. Again!

Sadly, despite the 4s defence having weathered the storm of multiple short corners until now, with only a couple of minutes to play, one snuck in to make the score 5-3, which was just beyond the team with the time left.

A much improved scoreline and performance compared to the first game against Hereford, which was commented on by them as well. The 4s should be proud of their grit and determination today, they didn’t give up and played some fantastic hockey!

MoM – Neve, playing out of position in defence where she had a stormer, but still made some amazing runs up the wing and also put her body on the line defending a short (great bruise already!)

Leonie – Laura, awesome saves, including diving, and with stick and glove. Never gave up.

Champagne Moment – a tie between Scarlett’s length-of-the-pitch goal, and Rach’s off the line save (attributed to Laura by most!)

No photos as it was too cold and wet to dig my phone out!
