Match Report: Men’s 2s vs Wotton Under Edge
Final Score: 3–2 (to us!)
What a rollercoaster of a game! It had everything — drama, chaos, quality hockey, and our first win of the season!
We started a little sleepy, going 1–0 down, clearly just giving Wotton a head start to make things interesting. But soon after, the team woke up and equalised to 1–1 (Jules H), reminding everyone that we do, in fact, know how to play hockey. Then, in a moment of generosity, we decided to gift them another goal (2–1), only to take it back with another equaliser (2–2, Sam BW). The comeback was sealed in style with a 3–2 winner (Henry S), sending the travelling supporters — and injured cheerleader Jamie — into wild celebration.
Defensively, young Noah was an absolute menace down the right, bullying Wotton’s strikers (who are double the size of him). He tackled everything in sight and still had time to start attacks from the back. No wonder he walked away with Man of the Match — it was a performance that made the strikers consider early retirement.
Up front, Sam BW’s drag flick was nothing short of filthy. Goal of the season contender already, and it’s only October. There is word that is may also have been caught on Alex’s camera. Don’t give that footage to Sam – it will go to his head!
Elsewhere, D Phil added some comic relief by accidentally aiming a rocket straight at Matt’s backside, a moment that will live long in the memory (and perhaps on Matt’s bruise chart).
And speaking of Matt — our DOD — his performance off the pitch deserves special mention. Not only did he get the score wrong (2-1, 3-1 and finally the correct score of 3-2), his DOD nominations were also extremely harsh.
Huge shoutout to Jamie for turning up to support despite braking his collar bone at training earlier in the week — his sideline enthusiasm was inspirational.
In truth, we played some fantastic hockey and should have buried Wotton Under Edge with a few more goals, but a win’s a win, and we’ll take it.
Final verdict:
• Great hockey.
• Great spirit.
• Great drag flick.
• Terrible scorekeeping.
MOM: Noah — absolute rock at the back.
DOD: Matt — for score errors and questionable judgment.
Next week: more goals.
Special mention to the entire team for a very solid performance, working for each other and making the correct passes. It finally seems to be working.
